Diwali Activity for your kids! Happy Diwali

Materials required: Happy upbeat music. Nothing else

Duration: 30 minutes

Ages: 4 & up

The festival of Diwali embodies the meaning of ‘Igniting the light within and spreading that light, in the form of joy & happiness, to others and our surroundings.'
This Diwali, lets teach our children to live and breathe this same exact meaning through a communication & music and movement activity.

This activity has 2 parts to it. The first part is about igniting the light within and second part is about spreading the happiness to others.

Part 1: Igniting the light within

Introduce the significance of festive lights, joy & happiness on Diwali. Then, introduce the activity by saying that we will be talking about ‘joyfulness’ and the things that give us ‘happiness’ in our lives, as well as the things that we can be ‘thankful’ for.

Ask them the following questions & discuss your answers too:

What brings you joy and makes you happy?

When you are down, what cheers you up?

How can you enjoy a boring task?

What was one of your most enjoyable times that you shared with family or friends?

What do you feel grateful & blessed to have in your life?

By now, your child will be feeling happy & positive emotions. They have ignited joy and happiness within themselves. It is now important to teach them the importance of spreading this happiness to their surroundings.

Part 2: Spreading happiness to others

Play happy, upbeat music. Tell your child to imagine that any one of their body parts is a paintbrush and they have to use it to spread colour to their surroundings. Begin dancing to the music and painting the space around with them as the dance movements. This is a super fun dance & movement activity when done with siblings & other family members.

After the dance activity, have a 5 minute discussion with them on ways they can spread colour, light & happiness to others. Direct them towards answers to do with kindness, love, & showing gratitude. Make them vow to do any one such activity this Diwali (before the end of this week) and make them realize how good it feels to spread the love and light to others.
